Tension headaches!  Yes, tension headaches occur as commonly in athletes as they do in the general population. The pain is described as a dull, constant, band-like pressure originating in the back of the head and radiating to the temporofrontal (side) area of the head. The headaches may be daily or seasonal and vary in intensity, location, and duration. Although the actual mechanism is thought to be due to constant contraction of the scalp muscles, additional psychological factors such as fatigue, anxiety, emotional stress, and depression may all play a role in an athlete’s headache attacks. Spinal adjustments, neck/head massage, and hydrotherapy are favorite treatments among athletes. Our office offers a careful selection of conservative modalities that often bring relief to to many who suffer from excessive muscle contraction in the upper back, neck, and head area.
